1. High Profile African Team
Taking a team of top players to another country will give us an opportunity to spend some quality time with the players, giving them vision for ministry and challenging them to ministry as a way of life. In June of 2009 we want to trust the Lord to bring together a team of Christian players for two weeks to go to North America for ministry. The team will play matches, do clinics and give their testimonies at events. This will also help AIA in those countries with their ministry to the top players.
This opportunity will enable us to develop quality leaders that will model a Christian life and through which people will come to know Jesus. We will also be able to help our ministry in North America to reach their professional players.
2. Total Athlete Development
Before and after the World Cup we want to give every professional soccer player in South Africa an opportunity to respond to a clear gospel presentation. All sport men and woman are developed physically, mentally and in some cases emotionally, but not spiritually. Through the “Total Athlete” strategy we want to use the physical, mental and emotional to get to the spiritual development.
This strategy will be a process we would like to take the players through to bring them to a point where they will join a weekly Bible study. The strategy will have the following components:
a. Sport and Life Conference
b. Day Seminars
c. Monthly socials
d. Total Athlete Training Camp
e. ”Total Athlete” Online Academy
f. Weekly discipleship group
g. One-on-one discipleship
h. Monthly meeting with disciples.
a. Sport and Life Conference
The Sport and Life conference is there to address the felt needs of the players but to show them the real need. We will use experts that can address the physical, mental and emotional needs of the players. All these experts will be Christians and who will bring the spiritual aspects through their area of expertise. Ultimately Jesus is the only One that can help. In June 2008 we hosted 23 players at our first conference. We were blessed with three excellent speakers: Jannie Botha (Sport psychologist); Sipho Ndzuzo (General Secretary of SAFPU {South African Football Player Union} and former Bafana Bafana player); Zach Computer Lamola (motivational speaker and former Kaiser Chiefs player). In June 2009 we will host our second conference. One of the needs that the professional players have, is the relationship with their wives. This issue will be one of the topics at the 2009 conference. We trust God that we will have 25 couples at this conference.
During the World Cup in 2010, we trust that we will have 30-40 professional players committed to the Lord, to come for ministry training and then to send them out during the World Cup to serve with the Churches and help with ministry.
b. Day Seminars
Not all the issues the players have can be addressed at the Sport and Life conference. During the season FIFA has International dates. During these dates there will be no soccer locally, so we will have day seminars aimed at having the non-Christian players attend. We will use this event to address relevant issues in the players’ lives and through that share the Gospel.
c. Monthly Social
Once a month we want to bring the players and their family and friends together for a social. This will be an informal time where some of the Christian players will share what God is doing in their lives. We also want to expose the wives and girlfriends to the Gospel. We want to challenge the wives and girlfriends to a monthly get-together where we can build into their lives.
d. Total Athlete Camps
The AIA Professional Training Camps are for current professional players who desire to take their relationship with God to a new level. The camp is aimed at better equipping the players to be a positive witness to their teammates, their opponents, and their fans.
The AIA Professional Training Camp curriculum includes:
- Integration of Faith in Sport,
- Glorifying God in the field of play, and
- Change room evangelism.
The lessons are interactive and are taught both in the classroom and on the field. This is where God, Life and Sport unite.
e. Total Athlete Academy
Our Canadian ministry has created an online academy. All the players we meet can become members. On this website they will be able to find help from Christian experts from all over the world to help them develop as athletes. The experts will address physical, mental, emotional and spiritual issues.
f-h. Discipleship
All of the above events are a filter to get the players to a weekly Bible Study. We would like to see a discipleship group in every top team in our country. In the Bible study there will be reliable people that we will disciple one-on-one. These disciples will also meet once a month to encourage one another.
3. High profile International Team to SA
This team will give us opportunities to play against professional teams in the PSL, Mvela and Vodacom leagues. After the match we will share the Gospel with the teams we played against. This will also give some of the Christian players in the Bible studies, the opportunity to experience how to reach other players.
In July 2008 we hosted a North American team. This team played against the National team of Swaziland, Ex-professionals, Bidvest WITS and 3 Vodacom teams. This helped us to start AIA in Swaziland and it excelled in the ministry with WITS.
In July 2009 a high profile international soccer team from Europe will come to SA. Some of the local professional players, who are currently in our Bible studies, will also be part of this team. The AIA team will play pre-season games against PSL and Mvela league teams. The team will also do clinics and outreaches. We would like to bring more high level teams to South Africa even after the World Cup that can open the door for us to reach the local players.
4. Prepare and Train the Church
We would like to bring in teams that can help to prepare and train the church to reach their community with the language of sport. Our goal is to start sharing the vision with churches in January 2008 so that they will be well equipped for our projects which will begin during the July 2008 holiday. Sports teams from Canada, USA, Netherlands and SA will be partnering with AIA SA to help train the church trough sports clinics.
Training for these projects will be conducted based upon discipling, evangelism and the Ubabalo curriculum. The objective of Ubabalo is to transform Africa through whole life coaching. Aspiring young adults in the Church will be identified and trained to coach soccer. Ubabalo has incorporated life skills into soccer skills. There is also a bible lesson that goes with every life skill. This will leave the church with trained people and a model to use beyond 2010.
5. 2010 Soccer Teams During the World Cup in 2010 we want to provide at least 10 teams for the churches in SA, to help with outreaches and events. These teams will be available to do clinics, play matches and give testimonies at different World Cup events, such as a live big screen showing of a game or at a youth rally. Two of these teams will be from Africa and 2-4 from South Africa. We also want to bring a top level Ladies team during the World Cup.
This is the program for the outreaches:
6-10 June Training conference in Pretoria.
11-25 June Outreach with the church.
26-27 Evaluation and departure. 6. High Profile Soccer Camp
A soccer camp will take place for the top South African youth between the ages of 15-18 yrs. The camp which will be a week long. The goal of the camp is to develop the Total Athlete: physically, mentally and spiritually. Eventually it is our desire is to partner with SAFA in making these camps an annual event with only the best youth players attending. The coaches of the camp will consist of local and international high level Christian coaches, as well as local professional players.
After the camp the participants will be linked with a local church that will help them to grow spiritually. A mature Christian player will also be given the responsibility to mentor them. If we can disciple the top young players we will see strong mature players entering the top leagues in SA. We hope they will be soccer players of stature and integrity and players who can make a stand for our Lord Jesus.
7. International Ladies Tournament
During 13-18 June we are trusting the Lord to help host a major Ladies tournament with SAFA. There will be 8 International teams playing in this tournament. We would like to use the event to help the Church to see how they can use a major event to share the Gospel with spectators. During the tournament we will have Christian artists perform and also have Christian players give testimonies during the event. In the printed program for the spectators there will be printed testimonies of players. There will also be telephone numbers people can phone if they want to receive Jesus as Saviour.
We also trust the Lord that this will be broadcast over TV. During these testimonies of players and the performance of Christian artists there will be telephone numbers on screen that people can phone for counselling. As teams drop out of the competition we? they would help with soccer coaching in the least developed areas. This will help the church further to use soccer as a means to reach the lost.
The Night after the final, we will have a big banquet to hand out the prizes for the tournament. We will invite prominent government and business people to the dinner. We will have a Christian business man and player give a talk and a testimony. It will give us an opportunity to reach the top officials and businessmen in the area.
7. Media
a. The Prize
This AIA produced DVD shares four fascinating stories of players and their participation in the World Cup. Each player shares his/her personal highs and lows through victories and defeats but most importantly openly they discuss their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
In the 2006 “The Prize” DVD we were able to re-live the excitement of the best goals and saves from the past and hear from players such as– Ednilson, Lucio, Ze Roberto, Lee Young-Pyo, Cyrill Domoraud and Tim Howard.
For 2010 Athletes in Action will be producing an updated DVD in line with ‘The Prize” 2006 World Cup. The focus of this DVD will be for the church outreaches and for public television viewing.
The 2006, “The Prize” was shown in 81 countries to 270 Million people and 450 750 were distributed. It is our goal to build from these numbers in 2010 and beyond.
b. Testimonies
On our updated website we will be frequently displaying different testimonies from both local and international professional and world cup players. It is our prayer that these testimonies be viewed online and will also be downloaded onto mobile phones so that they can be shared with others. The testimonies will address the player’s spiritual journey as well as certain issues that are common in our culture today.
7. Follow up for the Church
From 24 July to 11 August we will have about 350 people coming from AIA in the Netherlands to help the churches we helped during the World Cup to be trained in further sports ministry. They will make 35 teams of about 10 each and go to the churches that would like to have sports ministry as part of their vision to reach their community. These teams will trust the Lord to find a leader in the church that wants to use sport to reach the lost. This leader and other people interested in the church will receive the following training:
1. The Biblical foundation of Sport Ministry
2. Evangelism Through Sport
3. Discipleship through sport
4. Building sports ministry
8. Training Conference
All of the participating AIA teams will gather four days before the outreaches start for ministry training and then be sent out all over the country. We trust to have 30-40 professional players committed to the Lord to come for ministry training and then to send them out during the World Cup to serve with the Churches and help with ministry.
